Epidermal conductance as a component of dehydration avoidance in Digitaria californica and Eragrostis lehmanniana, two perennial desert grasses

چکیده
Epidermal conductance (gmin) is water lost through the cuticle and stomata of plants when stomatal conductance is minimal. Low gmin may affect survival of perennial grasses by maintaining tissue hydration during drought. If true, populations from environments where drought is severe may exhibit reduced gmin compared to those from less arid environments. Success of invasive grasses may also be associated with reduced gmin compared to non-invasive competitors. Using plants grown in a single environment, we measured gmin of leaves from populations of Digitaria californica from environments with similar annual precipitation but differing in average drought severity (southern Arizona and western Texas, USA), and a population of the exotic species Eragrostis lehmanniana that has invaded sites occupied by D. californica in Arizona. Epidermal conductance was lower in the D. californica population from the more arid environment (Texas). Likewise, gmin was lower in E. lehmanniana than in the Arizona D. californica population. Shoot biomass production as a fraction of gmin was higher in E. lehmanniana than in the D. californica populations and was higher in the Texas see front matter r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. A plurality of causal mechanisms explains the persistence or transience of soil seed banks
Annual forbs form short-term persistent soil seed banks whereas perennial grasses form mostly transient ones in the central Monte desert. A conceptual framework predicts that annual forb seeds will have primary dormancy, whereas perennial grasses will have low dormancy levels. We assessed whether the dormancy traits of four annual forb species and five perennial grass species can account for th...
متن کاملId # 26–07 Evaluation of a Number of Grass Species for Restoring Degraded Semi-arid Rangelands in Southern Africa
The biophysical environment is an important determinant of land degradation in both commercial and communal land tenure systems in South Africa. According to a recent study on the status of land degradation, approximately 25% of the total land cover in South Africa is degraded. Several technologies exist to restore the soil and vegetation degraded areas in natural pastures. To improve the produ...
متن کاملAn Assesment of Nutrient Content of Underutilized Grass Species of South India
In the past and now most of the developments in conventional agriculture have concentrate on major grasses with little attention to the minor, underutilized grasses and as yet undeveloped grasses of livestock. Many underutilized grass species are being lost each day and more of which have unknown potential will be lost. The present study is undertaken to carry out the nutrient content of twenty...
متن کاملSoil feedback of exotic savanna grass relates to pathogen absence and mycorrhizal selectivity.
Enemy release of exotic plants from soil pathogens has been tested by examining plant-soil feedback effects in repetitive growth cycles. However, positive soil feedback may also be due to enhanced benefit from the local arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Few studies actually have tested pathogen effects, and none of them did so in arid savannas. In the Kalahari savanna in Botswana, we compared...
